At the Doctor’s Part I (10 weeks)

After a long weekend of nausea, our first visit to the doctor’s office arrived today. With our light load of paperwork completed, we were ushered in to see Betty Garbutt, a nurse practitioner. She was a very nice and informative lady. She was able to inform me of two happy things 1) I probably won’t need a C-section unless i carry a 12 lb baby and 2) my uterus is not reverted so she could do the ultrasound non intrusively! Yay!! We checked in with the baby and took a few pictures. The baby is of normal size and we could even see the heartbeat. No chance for twins, which I think is good for us :). For those of you new to looking at ultrasounds, the baby is the thing between the two “+’s”. Betty pointed out a blob that was an eyesocket and a blob that was a hand as well.

After a TB skin test it was off to the lab for urinalysis and 6 vials of blood to be drawn for the myriad of tests. I’m not sure when I get those results back, but I do head back to the office on Thursday. I called my insurance later to find out that I only have the one initial co-pay (Score!), but that I’m not covered for the Ultra Screen (the earliest down syndrome screening). I’m not too interested in laying $650 down for that, as that will be tested for in another few weeks anyways. So far, so good.

The jig is up

As I was spending quality barfy bathroom time in the public bathroom at work today (for the first time ever), I began wondering how long will I be able to keep my pregnancy a secret from my co-workers. Lucky for me I had the bathroom to myself, but had that not been the case that would obviously raise some red flags to many of my female co-workers. Just one more week until the big doctor appointment. I can’t wait to find out more information! :) I figure when we get the a-ok, we can then start sharing our news with everyone.

There’s a baby wildfire spreading out amongst our circle of friends. Dan & Leah (Jan 26th), Tania & Albert, Raj & Minita (Feb 10th) all have had their babies in the past month. I have yet to see any of the wee ones in person, but they sure look precious in pictures.

“Not in here mister. This is a Mercedes”

This morning I finally achieved the status of one of my favorite Spaceballs characters. :( I’m still feeling pretty poorly, but I managed to get a few spoonfuls of oatmeal in. You see my body likes to do this funny thing (and it’s been like this for a week), where I’m both nauseous and painfully hungry at the same time. I can’t tell you how frustrating this is. There are moments when I think I’ve passed this whole nauseous phase by, just to be greeted by something far worse. I keep thinking that this mostly passes after the first trimester. And then I think is it a blessing or a curse that that is 4 more weeks from now?
